The business was closed at the time.  But, there are three apartments on the second floor.

Owner Terry Frederick quickly worked to get everyone out.

"Terry came banging on the door, he said get out, there's smoke in the building.  So I just threw on some clothes and got out of there as fast as I could," said Dorothy Morse.

The fire spread fast.

"Fire traveled through the walls, came up through the roof.  It was a tough fire to fight because of the basement fire, there's no ventilation down there," said Troy Fire Chief Tom Garrett.

County legislator introduces calorie counting law for chain restaurants

Rensselaer County Legislator Peter Grimm is attempting to introduce a local law calling for Rensselaer County to support calorie counting on local fast food chain restaurants.

Grimm is urging the creation of a local law similar to those already in effect in neighboring Albany and Schenectady Counties which mandate that chain restaurants display nutritional information, specifically calories contained in menu items.

"It is our responsibility to help our families and children make wise and healthy nutritional choices...putting information in plain sight puts knowledge in the hands of the people," said Grimm.

In March of 2010, Grimm recommended this local law to the Legislature and was met with opposition from the Republican leadership.

According to the Capital Region Healthy Communities Coalition, menu calorie labeling can have a dramatic impact on our Region's obesity epidemic and the related health effects.
