Documentary on Puppy Mills to be screened

MENANDS - On Monday, April 30, a special showing of the documentary film "Madonna of the Mills" will be held in the Legislative Office Building.

The film follows a woman named Laura as she save thousands of dogs from puppy mills in Pennsylvania where the dogs spend their entire lives in tiny cages without any human contact.

The film screening is free and open to the public. After the screening, attendees will have an opportunity to learn about pending legislation in New York.

The screening is at 11:30a in room 711-A.

EAST GREENBUSH - A missing Chihuahua named Rio that had been missing since Saturday has been found.

The owner says the dog was safe and being taken care of by someone who called as soon as she saw the missing poster.

Rio is very happy to be home.

MENANDS - On Saturday, April 21, the Mowhawk Hudson Humane Society will be hosting the 125th Arounf The World for 80 Strays benefit gala.

The Society will present the 2012 Humane Heroes Awards, and hold a live auction of many great items.

The gala will be held at the Hilton Garden Inn on Hoosick Street.

Reservations to the Black-tie event are $125 a person and are available by calling 518-434-8128 Ext. 206.

He answers to Rio, and was last seen on Saturday.

Coco was last seen on Tuesday, Feb. 14 at Hills Landing and Central Avenue in Troy.

HVCC hosts free lecture in the Animal Advocacy Seminar Series

Hudson Valley Community College and the Rensselaer County Sheriff’s Office are holding a free lecture in the Animal Advocacy Seminar Series.

Nationally and internationally acclaimed animal cruelty expert, Dr. Randall Lockwood will be the featured speaker on December 8.

Lockwood is the Senior Vice President for Anti-Cruelty Field Services at the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA).  He has worked with humane societies and law enforcement agencies for more than 25 years, serving as an expert on dog aggression, dog bite prevention, illegal dog fighting, and the interactions between people and animals.  Lockwood has testified in numerous trials involving cruelty to animals – namely, serving as an analyst in the Michael Vick dogfighting case. He also started the Humane Society of the U.S.'s First Strike Campaign which recognizes the link between animal cruelty and human violence.
