Applications available for DEC Environmental Education Summer Camps

The application is now posted online for the Department of Environmental Conservation Environmental Education Summer Camps.

The DEC Environmental Education Camps offer campers experiences in sportsman education, games, lessons, hands-on activities, swimming, hiking, canoeing and other outdoor activities. Through these activities, campers will learn about forests, water quality, nature and more.

There are four different camps kids can attend, Camp Colby, Camp DeBruce, Camp Rushford and Camp Pack Forest. Campers will participate in discovery groups and will complete six lessons. These lessons include group dynamics, explorations of different habitats and human impacts on the environment.  Science, problem solving, games, journal keeping and wildlife activities are also part of what campers will experience.

Camp starts on July 1, 2012 and goes until August 18, 2012. Campers can attend multiple times during the seven, week-long sessions.

Child Care available for Memphis shows

SCHENECTADY - Having trouble finding a sitter to watch the little ones so you can enjoy a Tony Award winning musical? A new program from Proctors and the Schenectady Branch of the Capital District YMCA hopes to end that.

YMCA Parents Night Out is a convenient, affordable, and safe solution. Through the program parents can sign up for childcare at the new Downtown Y while they attend events at Proctors State Street Complex.

Registration must be completed 48 hours prior to the show.

Citizens Bank seeks student applicants for scholarship program

ALBANY - Applications for the Citizens Bank's TruFit Good Citizen Student Scholarship program are now being accepted.

Last year, the scholarship program awarded a total of $50,000 to college students whose volunteer efforts made a difference in their communities.

This year, 40 scholarships will be awarded to high school seniors and current college students across the country who have been active in community service.

Applicants are asked to write an essay of no more than 250 words or record a 60-second video summing up their responsibility and leadership skills gained through community service experiences.

The scholarships will be awarded this summer for the 2012-2013 academic year.

14th Annual Mother of the Year Contest

ALBANY - The City of Albany and St. Peters Health Partners are announcing the 14th annual Mother of the Year Contest, celebrating Capital Region moms who have demonstrates a tremendous commitment to their family and who have made a positive impact on their children and loved ones.

Mayor Jerry Jennings will greet the five finalists and crown one of them on stage at this years Tulip Festival in Washington Park.

Easter Egg Hunt to be held

TROY - Mayor Lou Rosamillia today announced the citys 7th annual Easter Egg Hunt will be held on Saturday, March 31, in Prospect Park. The event begins at 11:30a and is open to all residents who have children 12 and under.

I variety of activities will be offered for the children including face-painting, egg coloring, as well as a special appearance by the Easter Bunny.

Nano-tech at Troy museum

TROY - The College of Nanoscale Science and Engineering (CNSE) is partnering with the Children’s Museum of Science and Technology (CMOST) in Troy to share the excitement of nanotechnology with children, as CNSE kicks off a weeklong series of events and activities as part of “National NanoDays 2012,” a national effort to raise awareness of the small science that’s having a big impact in today’s society.

On Saturday, March 24 from 12:30 to 3:30 p.m., “future nanoscientists” will receive an educational and entertaining introduction to nanotechnology through a number of highly engaging and visual experiments. Children will be able to explore DNA structures by creating a necklace of wheat germ DNA, make “gummy capsules” that demonstrate self-assembled polymer spheres, and participate in a variety of activities to encourage students to pursue educational and career opportunities in the fast-growing nanotechnology sector in the Capital Region and across New York state.

CNSE to partner with local organizations for NanoDays 2012

The College of Nanoscale Science and Engineering (CNSE) of the University at Albany is partnering with several local organizations to present events and activities to celebrate national “NanoDays 2012.”

According to a statement, CNSE is collaborating with the Schenectady Museum and Suits-Bueche Planetarium, the Children’s Museum of Science and Technology (CMOST) in Troy, the Boys and Girls Clubs of Albany and the Capital District YMCA’s Black and Latino Achievers Program to offer programs from March 24 through the 31st.
