Habitat for Humanity breaks ground in South Troy | News

SOUTH TROY - Nine families will be able to move into newly-built homes, after Habitat for Humanity broke ground on a project they predict will revitalize a gateway into Troy.

It's the largest 'Habitat' project ever launched in the City, offering lower income families who qualify  the dream of making home ownership, a reality.

City officials joined Habitat representatives to break ground in an empty lot at the corner of Burden Avenue and Cross Street Friday.

The new development called "Fox Hollow," is named after the late Seymour Fox, whose estate helped support the project, along with a HOME grant from the Troy.

Volunteers and the future homeowners will build the nine properties with donations of money and materials.

Paul Diggs said his mother has already been chosen for the project.

"It makes me happy for my mom because I'm one of six children so my younger siblings are going to have the chance to grow up in this community," he said.

"Let's face it the American dream is to own a home. Homeowners pay property taxes, property taxes fill the City coffers and that's good for everybody. So our job it so make it happen and the opportunities are here right now," said Michael Jacobson, Executive Director, Habitat for Humanity Capital District.

Jacobson said it will take about a year to build the homes and they'll be accepting more applications for interested buyers this Fall.
