The federal government says more than 100,000 Americans are waiting for an organ transplant.

Facebook wants to draw attention to their needs.

Users can now add their donor status to their profile or timeline page. They can also enroll as donors through links to official registries on the world's largest social networking site.

Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg says his friendship with Steve Jobs helped move the idea along.

Jobs, the co-founder of Apple, got a liver transplant before he died late last year.
