School holds open house

The Sacred Heart School in Troy is holding an open house for prospective and returning students.

The school says prospective students for Early Childhood (3yr. olds & 4 yr. olds) through 6th Grade as well as Pre-K for (4 yr. olds in the Troy School District only) and their parents are invited to tour the school and meet teachers, current students and administrators. 

The Open Houses will be on Sunday, January 30 from 1 to 3 p.m. and February 3 from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m.

County holds rabies vaccination clinics

County holds rabies vaccination clinics

Rensselaer County Executive Kathleen Jimino has announced the 2011 schedule of the County’s Rabies Vaccination Clinics.  The clinics goal is to prevent human exposure to the potentially deadly disease by immunizing domestic animals and pets that could potentially carry the disease. 

"Immunizing your pets for rabies is a crucial step in preventing human exposure to this deadly disease and I encourage all pet owners to take advantage of these clinics,” said Jimino.

During the upcoming clinics Rensselaer County Department of Health staff will provide the appropriate rabies vaccination and booster shots to cats, ferrets and dogs as mandated by the New York State Department of Health. 

Owners are asked to present their pets' most recent immunization certificate, and all pets must be secured either in a carrier or on a leash.  The first hour of each clinic is dedicated to cats and ferrets with the second hour dedicated to dogs.

The first clinic is on Tuesday.  The dates, locations, times, and contact numbers are as follows:

Troy is currently in the running to win a $250,000 Pepsi Refresh Grant.

According to the Troy Downtown Collaborative, the grant will be used to revitalize the economy of historic downtown. Troy will also use the funding for business development collateral and advertising.

The Troy Downtown Collaborative says they are a group of citizen activists formed to cultivate the economic growth and development of the downtown Troy community by creating an increasingly  sustainable environment that celebrates the city’s history while building towards its future.

Schodack holds swearing-in ceremony

A town in Rensselaer County will be swearing is holding a swearing-in ceremony on New Year’s Day.

Schodack will be swearing-in Judge Bruce Wagner and Councilman Michael Kenney at 10 a.m. on January 1, 2011.

The ceremony will be held at Town Hall at the intersection of Shuurman Road and Routes 9 and 20.

This event is open to the public.

State park holds 26th annual winter festival

State park holds 26th annual winter festival

Grafton Lakes State Park is holding its 26th annual winter festival in January.

All are welcome to join in on this day of free winter fun featuring live animal exhibits, kids’ activities, an ice fishing tournament, sleigh rides, Polar Plunge, and more. 

The event is from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on January 22.

Recycle your holiday tree at the park

Need to get rid of your holiday tree? Why not recycle it!

Grafton Lakes State Park is accepting Christmas trees for recycling after the holiday. 

The trees will be recycled or reused in ways that benefit the park and the public. 

Those interested in dropping off their trees can do so at the park’s maintenance shop between 8 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. on January 16.

Classes address science methods on animal tracking

Classes address science methods on animal tracking

Tamakoce Wilderness Programs and the Friends of Dyken Pond have put together a series of classes using citizen science methods on animal tracking.

The goals of these classes are to educate the public while also further conservation efforts on the Rensselaer Plateau.

Each day will be in a different location including, Dyken Pond Environmental Education Center and Grafton Lakes State Park in Rensselaer County.

The tracking series is part of an effort to form a wildlife monitoring team to collect data using citizen science methods, and submit the information to a regional database.
