Learn to skate program cancels

The "Learn to Skate" program at the Knickerbacker Ice Arena has been cancelled Wednesday due to the weather.

Troy Hellions host first game of the season

The Hellions of Troy Roller Derby League will the Buffalo-based visiting roller derby team, the Nickel City Knockouts on Saturday.

Themed "Queen of the Rink” this event will be the Winter-Spring season opener.

It’s at the Rollarama Skating Center in Schenectady.

Tickets for the bout are $10 in advance, $12 at the door, and $3 for kids under 12.

For each bout, the Hellions give a portion of ticket sales to a local charity.  The charity for Saturday’s bout will be Parsons Child and Family Center. 

The Hellions will host two more home bouts this season on February 5 against the Oz Rollergirls from Oswego, and March 5 against the Killah Bees of Providence Roller Derby in Rhode Island.

County Legislature holds monthly meeting

The Rensselaer County Legislature is holding a meeting Tuesday.

The monthly meeting is set to start at 5:30 p.m.

It will take place in the chambers of the County Legislature in the County Office Building at 1600 7th Avenue in downtown Troy.

Hudson River Combined Sewer Overflow holds public meeting

The Hudson River Combined Sewer Overflow is holding a public meeting this week.

The meeting on Thursday will focus on the efforts to address water quality in the Hudson, specifically the 2009 Tributary Sampling Findings.

Albany Pool Communities impacted include Albany, Cohoes, Rensselaer, Troy and Watervliet.

The meeting is at 7 p.m. at Hudson Valley Community College’s Bulmer Telecommunications Center.

Free workshop offers energy saving tips, tools

Cornell Cooperative Extension (CCE) of Albany County is offering a free two-hour workshop to help residents save energy.

Save Energy, Save Dollars provides low-cost and no-cost ways to save energy and reduce energy bills. It links consumers with programs that provide energy-efficiency improvements with subsidies, low-interest loans, or free services to qualifying households.

Workshop participants receive a free energy kit with outlet/light switch gaskets, outlet caps, rope caulk, CFL light bulb, shrink fit window insulation kit and a refrigerator thermometer.

The event will be held on Tuesday, January 11 at 6 p.m. at the Troy’s Main Branch Library at 100 Second Street.

Local gallery holds call for artists

Local gallery holds call for artists

The Fulton Street Gallery in Troy is looking for artists for their SMALL Works Salon and Juried Exhibition.

All artists within a 150 mile radius of the Capital Region can submit their works eligible for juried exhibition and prizes.


Up to 5 submissions will be accepted through shipping or hand delivered the week of January 17 during regular gallery hours.

The deadline for submission is January 22.

Seton Health offers free bladder screenings

Seton Health Specialty Services is offering free bladder screenings Thursday. The free screening, open to the public, includes a urine test and bladder scan, followed by educational information and recommendations by Seton Health medical staff. The event is from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. at the Massry Center’s Incontinence and Wound Services. To schedule an appointment, or for more information, call (518) 268-5380. According to Seton Health, bladder problems are very common and easily treated, and people experiencing any of the following symptoms should consider the screening: a sudden, strong urge to urinate; leaking urine; frequent urination (more than eight times in a 24-hour period); inability to control urination; involuntary urination when coughing, laughing, sneezing, running, or performing other physical activity; waking up more than twice a night to urinate.
