Mayor Tutunjian gears up for public hearing

Troy Mayor Harry Tutunjian is gearing up for Wednesday’s public hearing for the city’s annual One Year Action Plan (OYAP). 

The meeting will be open to comments on the city’s Consolidated Development Block Grant (CDBG) programs. 

“Through our CDBG program, we’ve expanded affordable housing opportunities and revitalized neighborhoods, among many other successes.  These efforts have empowered our residents to take an active role in the city’s future and I encourage our residents to have their voice heard at this public hearing,” said Mayor Harry Tutunjian. 

It will be held at 6:00 p.m. in Conference Room A of Troy City Hall at 1776 6th Avenue. 

 

Vartanantz Day Commemoration comes to RPI

The Knights and Daughters of Vartan will once again host the annual Vartanantz Day Commemoration on Sunday, February 20, at 1 p.m. at the RPI Chapel and Cultural Center. That's according to the Watervliet-based Capital District Armenian Genocide Committee.

The guest speaker for the program will be Dennis R. Papazian, Ph.D., Knights of Vartan Grand Commander. His topic will be “Who Killed Eastern Christianity.” A musical performance by concert pianist, Rouben Aivazian, Ph.D., will also be part of the program.

The public is invited to attend the free event. Light refreshments will be served following the program.

	Troy Night Out continues tonight

After taking a month off, Troy Night Out is back tonight.

As part of the monthly event in Downtown Troy, stores will stay open till 9 p.m.

“Downtown Troy is home to many small, local, independent retailers” said Interim Director of the Downtown Troy BID, Elizabeth Young. “Shopping local keeps more needed dollars here in our local economy. We are challenging folks to ‘Shop 12180’ – doing as much of their holiday shopping as possible within our local zip code.”

From 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. the streets Downtown Troy will be alive with art openings, exhibits and receptions, live musical and theatrical performances, retail shop open houses as well as restaurants and cafes offering special events and discounts.

5th annual Bowl-a-thon to benefit Netter's Fund

The Netter’s Fund is sponsoring their 5th Annual Bowl-a-thon.

The event includes bowling along with 50/50 raffles.

It’s on March 5 at Uncle Same Lanes at 600 Fulton St. in Troy.

Registration is from 1 to 2 p.m. and bowling is from 2 to 4:30 p.m.

The cost is $20 per person.

State park holds 26th annual winter festival

State park holds 26th annual winter festival

Grafton Lakes State Park is holding its 26th annual winter festival on Saturday.

All are welcome to join in on this day of free winter fun featuring live animal exhibits, kids’ activities, an ice fishing tournament, sleigh rides, Polar Plunge, and more. 

The annual ice fishing contest draws about 200 fishermen annually and will run from 5 a.m. to 3 p.m. on all the ponds in the park.  Participants can call the Park Office for information about pre-registering or register starting at 5am on January 22nd at the park’s maintenance shop.  A $12 entry fee for adults 16 and older is required to participate in the fishing tournament.  Children may enter at no charge.   Please remember that all participants 16 and older must have a New York State fishing license to fish in the park at any time.

Seton health offers free food for thought series

Seton Health/St. Mary’s Hospital is offering the next program in the Food for Thought series, “Learning To Live With Lung Disease.” Food for Thought is a free series of educational and informative discussions and programs for the community featuring some of the area’s leading professionals. 

Seton Health cardiac and pulmonary professionals Karen Druckman, Regina Kasper and Mary Schmigel will be leading the discussion.  The lecture will stress the importance of exercise and nutrition.  The speakers will also instruct breathing skills and techniques to help with daily living activities.

It’s on January 26 at 6 p.m. at St. Mary’s Hospital at 1300 Massachusetts Ave. in Troy, in Conference Rooms A and B.

County initiates Human Services Innovation project

Troy-Rensselaer County Executive Kathleen Jimino has announced that the county will be initiating a Human Services Innovation Project. 

The project will seek ways to address the service needs of clients requiring assistance from various county departments in a more efficient and effective manner that can bring about better outcomes for the individual or family in need.

“Under this project high need clients will be looked at more broadly to prepare them and place them on the road to self sufficiency.  To do this I am asking my Human Services Cabinet to look at all the needs an individual or family may have to create a more orchestrated approach,” said Jimino

The Rensselaer County Human Services Cabinet consists of representatives of the Department of Mental Health, Employment and Training, Probation, Department of Social Services, Department for Aging, Department for Youth, and the Department of Health.
