Senior center falls victim to phone scam

COHOES - The Cohoes Senior Center is struggling to stay open and now it's being preyed upon by scammers.

The center says someone has been calling seniors in Rensselaer County, claiming to be raising money for the center and the senior meals program.

The caller referenced a story WNYT showed on Tuesday about the center's campaign to keep its doors open.

The center is not soliciting phone donations and has contacted authorities and the sheriff's department is now investigating.

“There are many scams out there that victimize innocent people, but nothing is more despicable than those which target the elderly,” said County Executive Kathleen Jimino in a statement.  “We want to remind residents, and especially our seniors, that no County Department will ever contact you by phone to request a donation.”
