Man charged under SAFE Act

NEW LEBANON – State police have arrested  a man under the new SAFE Act after a routine traffic stop.

State police say that after they pulled over Gregory Dean a handgun was discovered in the front seat of his car that contained nine rounds of ammunition.

Dean, 31, of Hopewell Junction had legally obtained the handgun.

He was also found to be driving on a suspended license. He was issued appearance tickets on the charges of unlicensed operation and unlawful possession of ammunition feeding device. 

Troy EMT stabbed with hypodermic needle

TROY - A routine medical call turned into a potentially life threatening situation for a paramedic in Troy tonight.

Police say that paramedic was stabbed with a hypodermic needle while trying to help a man who apparently overdosed on drugs. Police aren't releasing the paramedics name.

They have arrested 32-year-old Joel Burgess of Mechanicville. Police say Burgess lashed out at and stabbed the EMT who was trying to help him outside a Hannaford Supermarket.

Both were taken to Samaritan Hospital for treatment, but that's when police say Burgess ran from cops.

They eventually caught him and he's been taken back into custody.

Troy Police make city's first SAFE Act arrest

TROY - A parolee has become the first man to be charged in the city under the New York SAFE Act. Police arrested 25-year-old Raysheem Washington Tuesday night.

Police say he was carrying a 9mm, fully-loaded handgun with a loaded 13-round magazine.

Police were called to the area of Jefferson and Third streets for reports of shots fired. They were able to find three men who matched the description of those involved.

Two of the suspects were safely brought into custody, but police say Washington ran. An officer caught up to him and police say the two fought. Police say the officer broke his hand during the struggle.

Police tell NewsChannel 13 that Washington is a parolee and is not allowed to possess a firearm.

Police say the other two men were questioned by officers and then released.

Troy Police catch armed suspect after pursuit

TROY -- Two brave people helped police catch an armed suspect on the run.

Authorities say Donald Lewis of Cohoes was involved in a fight near 87 Fourth St. Wednesday afternoon and ran when police showed up.

Two people in the area of the Bethany Center on State Street helped police by blocking the suspect's path.

Police say Lewis then pulled a fully-loaded handgun but dropped it when officers ordered him to.

Judge: No bail for accused bank robber

TROY - A Rensselaer County judge denied bail Tuesday morning for an accused bank robber.

Zachary Zeoli was arraigned Tuesday after he was arrested in Menands Monday night.

Police say he robbed the First Niagara Bank on Second Avenue in Troy Wednesday and the M&T bank on Hoosick Street two days later.

 

Another bank robbed in Troy

TROY – The M&T Bank on Hoosick Street was robbed Friday morning.

Police say the man handed a clerk a note demanding money.

Police believe this is connected to another bank robbery earlier this week.

The First Niagara Bank on Second Avenue was held up in a similar fashion on Wednesday.

The suspect is still on the loose.

BB gun and paintball rifle send Troy School into lockdown

TROY – A BB gun and paintball rifle landed two people under arrest.

Police say a 16-year-old and 19-year-old Terrance Huneau were using the guns to threaten people outside of School 2 in Troy shortly after 1 p.m. Tuesday afternoon.

A witness who called police said the guns could be mistaken for firearms.

The school went into lockdown.

Police found both suspects at a home a short distance away.

They now face charges of criminal trespass and unlawful possession of a weapon.
