Historical Society to launch $100K fundraising campaign

Rensselaer County Historical Society (RCHS) has announced that it will be launching of a new fund-raising campaign: the Andersen, Lindholm, Shaver Challenge. 

According to a press release issued by the historical society, they  are launching a $100,000 challenge campaign to raise endowment and building reserve funds.  An anonymous donor will match contributions at a 1 to 1 ratio, leading to a total fund-raising amount of $200,000.

Trustees of the RCHS have already pledged more than $20,000 to the campaign. 

The release also states that funds raised will also be used to create a Building Reserve Fund.  RCHS owns two 19th century townhouse buildings, the National Register listed Hart-Cluett House and its Carriage House, serving as a house museum, and the adjacent Carr Building, housing a research library, galleries, meeting spaces, extensive collections storage space, and staff offices.

Troy Women's Club gives $10K to YWCA

The Troy Women’s Club has donated $10,000 to the YWCA of the Greater Capital Region, Inc.

The gift will go towards the development of a new mentoring program for graduates of the successful Ready for Work program which provides participants with 20 hours per week of job training, consisting of paid on site work experience, basic computer trainings, financial literacy, resume writing and interviewing. 

"We are thrilled to receive such a substantial gift from the Troy Women’s Club. Their support and enthusiasm for the work we do is truly appreciated," said Executive Director, Sherry A. Rounds in a statement. "They have made it possible for us to continue changing women’s lives in the Capital Region, for that we are eternally grateful.”

Established in 1920, The Troy Women’s Club, has a history of giving back to the community both socially and financially.

Saratoga Springs will hold it's annual Saratoga Springs Mardi Gras Festival on Saturday April 30th from 11am to 4:30.

This is a great celebration in downtown Saratoga Springs including an "Arti Gras" Parade on Beekman St., Cajun Cooking Competition with the Saratoga Restaurants, Music, and more! We've had a whole Mardi Gras party shipped up from the South - Beads, Masks, Crowns and other surprises....

The Beekman Street Festival starts the neighborhood party off with a wide assortment of fun and crazy activities at 11:00

Commission on Economic Opportunity sponsors 'Community Action in Action' event

On Friday, May 13, the Commission on Economic Opportunity for the Greater Capital Region, Inc. (CEO) will sponsor a daylong “Community Action in Action” event.

The day will provide members of the public an opportunity to give back to their community by joining CEO employees in volunteering at four organizations located throughout Rensselaer County to help with their Spring clean ups and special projects. Those interested in volunteering for all or part of the day should call CEO to register.

Troy Music Hall hosts Chicago's Second City

The Troy Savings Bank Music Hall will be hosting The Second City, Chicago’s legendary sketch and improv theatre, on Thursday.

NewsChannel 13’s Benita Zahn will be a special guest.  Zahn is on the Board of Building on Love, an organization dedicated to supporting Ronald McDonald House Charities chapters and the families they serve.  $2 of every ticket sold will go to benefit this charity.

The event is at 7:30 p.m. 

Tickets are $32, $27, and $20, with a student price of $10. 

Tickets can be purchased over the phone, in person, or online at www.troymusichall.org.  They are also available at the Troy Savings Bank Music Hall Box Office at 30 Second Street in Troy from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.

The Great Cloth Diaper Change!  Guinness World Record's Diaper Changing Challenge

The Sonrise Diaper Service & Retail Store along with other local businesses will join in an effort to set the world record for the most cloth diapers changed simultaneously.

Why...you may ask?  According to the RDA (Real Diaper Association) cloth diapers reduce waste for families with children in diapers by more than 50%.  This world record attempt is a great way to show the world how many people are already choosing and using reusable cloth diapers successfully.

Families will be gathering at the Calvary United Methodist Church at 15 Ridge Place in Latham

Seniors Helping After Retirement host annual luncheon

Seniors Helping After Retirement (S.H.A.R.E.) will be hosting its annual luncheon on April 28.

S.H.A.R.E. is a program where Rensselaer County senior citizens donate volunteer hours towards community service at one of the county’s five senior centers, their seniors clubs and in their communities.  Many of the seniors volunteer hundreds of hours each year, assisting with projects in nutrition services, receptionist duties, transportation escorts, knitting and crocheting for hospitalized children and veterans, dance and choral performances, bingo callers, decorating, and arts and crafts and a host of other worthwhile and rewarding activities.  The senior citizens will be honored for their commitment to those endeavors and for serving their communities.
