TROY - The Rensselaer County Historical Society will be opening a new exhibit commemorating teh 150th anniversary of Troy's Great Fire, on May 10, at 5:30p.
On May 10, 1962, a train crossing the Troy-Green Island Bridge ddropped a spark from its engine and ignited the wooden bridge. The blaze spread quickly, destroying over 600 buildings in six hours. By all accounts Troy was a city in chaos.
The advances that had been recently developed, such as steam-powered fire engines were applauded for their role in saving the city.
The exhibit will feature rare artifacts, letters, personal accounts, and artist depictions of this major event.
