Hospital seeks entries for 2011 art exhibition

The Viewpoint Gallery at Sunnyview Rehabilitation Hospital is seeking entries for its "8th International Acquisitions Exhibition for Artists with Disabilities," to be held September 16 to October 14, 2011.

The exhibition is a showcase for individuals across the globe who were born with or who have developed physical and mental disabilities, brain and spinal cord injuries, autism, cerebral palsy, multiple sclerosis, amputation or blindness. The event is open to all artists, regardless of experience or formal training.

All work submitted for consideration must have been created after the onset of disability. The disabilities will not be taken into consideration during judging. There is no cost to enter. Emerging or experienced artists alike are encouraged to participate. Entries must be postmarked by March 21, 2011. To register online, visit www.NortheastHealth.com/ViewpointGallery; or for more information, please contact the Sunnyview Rehabilitation Hospital Foundation at (518) 386-3520.

Approximately 80 works of art will be selected for inclusion in the exhibit. All visual media, including oil paintings, watercolors, photos, sketches and mixed media collages, are acceptable. Entries will be judged by a local panel of experts with a background in art, including: Jill Foster, graphic designer for the New York State Museum in Albany; Megan Hyde, curatorial assistant for the Frances Young Tang Teaching Museum and Art Gallery at Skidmore College in Saratoga; and Emily Zimmerman, curatorial assistant for EMPAC (Experimental Media and Performing Arts Center) in Troy.

A "Best of Show" winner will be selected among the entries with a $500 prize awarded; a second place winner will receive $125; and third place, $50. Winners also will be selected in the following categories: "Honorable Mention," "Solo Exhibition Award," and "Inspiration Award." Artwork chosen for exhibition will be made available for sale, with a portion of the proceeds to benefit Sunnyview.

The mission of Sunnyview Rehabilitation Hospital is to improve the lives of individuals with disabilities and their families. Sunnyview is home to the Viewpoint Gallery -- Schenectady County's largest art collection -- which serves to inspire and enhance the benefits of creative expression in the community it serves through exposure and participation in the arts.
