Troy to hear concerns over building project

TROY - The city is hosting a meeting for residents who are upset about a new construction project.

The issue is the Morrison Avenue apartments in South Troy that was originally approved as senior apartments two years ago.

A new plan for luxury apartments has fewer apartments and more parking.

Residents say the new layout never went back before the planning board.

Brush burning ban continues in NYS

ALBANY, N.Y. (AP) - New York conservation officials say continuing dry weather has raised the danger of wildfires, advising rural and suburban residents that all residential brush burning is prohibited during the usually high fire risk period from March 16 through May 14.

Department of Environmental Conservation Commissioner Joe Martens says the number of seasonal fires has dropped 35 percent since the open burning regulation took effect in 2009.

While allowing residential brush burning most of the year in towns with populations of less than 20,000, it prohibits open burning statewide in early spring when most of the state's wildfires occur.

Factors include lack of green vegetation, abundant dry grass and leaves, warm temperatures and wind.

Violators can face a minimum fine of $500 for a first offense.

Family leaps to safety to escape Wynantskill fire

WYNANTSKILL – A family of five is in the hospital after jumping from a window to escape a fire in their Wynantskill home.

Authorities say the mother, father, two young children and an infant are all expected to be okay. They're at Albany Medical Center.

The fire broke out in their home at 15 Bellemeade St. just before 2 a.m. Friday at the home of Christopher & Karli Sydo. Neighbors saw the flames and called for help.

The assistant fire chief says Christopher leapt from second floor window. The mother, Karli then tossed the three children, including the newborn, to him before jumping herself.

While there is damage to the home, firefighters say it doesn't appear the home will have to be demolished.
