Race to the Top education funds at risk

ALBANY - State Education Department Commissioner John King expressed concern Tuesday that hundreds of millions of dollars in federal aid are now in jeopardy.

"Certainly disappointed because we thought we'd be further along in the evaluation process," King said.

This came after a stern rebuke from the federal government that New York has not kept its promises to get Race to the Top funds.

U.S. Education Secretary Arne Duncan said in a report "New York has a chance to be a national leader, or a laggard," and that "backtracking on reform commitments could cost the state hundreds of millions of dollars.

"He's right. We made a set of commitment in our Race to the Top application. I was there for the interview. We made some promises. He's going to hold us to those promises. That's the right thing to do. The right thing for the administration to do," King added.

Jury selected in George Mott trial

TROY - A jury was seated in the Rensselaer County murder trial of George Mott. He is accused of killing Rosemary Crosier 18 years ago.

The process wrapped up Tuesday evening and the jury has been seated in the case. There are 14 jurors, including two alternates.

The process took two entire days and that was because many jurors in the jury pool said they have heard of the case in some way.

The murder is widely known in Troy. Mott is the man on trial and he is accused of killing Rosemary Crosier, a 47-year-old mother of six, overnight at her place of work between March 23 and March 24,1994. She worked at a group home at the time.

A jury pool of 100 people was called in Tuesday afternoon to select the remaining two jurors. Judge Andrew Ceresia asked them if anyone there knew of the case. About 40 people raised their hands. Another 25 said they could not participate for personal reasons.
